Is Vegan Skin Care Good?

What is vegan skincare?

Anything that you come across that is vegan will not contain animal-derived ingredients or animal by-products. This includes ingredients such as gelatine, keratin, glycerin, collagen, lanolin, squalene and milk proteins.

Vegan products are also usually cruelty-free, simply meaning that they have not been tested on any animals before being sold. If there has been any animal cruelty throughout any part of the process of making the product it cannot really be classed as vegan.

Vegan and cruelty-free do not always go hand in hand though, so just because you see a cruelty-free label that does not mean the product is necessarily vegan. It will not have been tested on animals by could still contain ingredients derived from animals such as honey and milk.

Animal testing is not even considered the most effective way to determine the safety of a product anymore. This is because we have completely different bodies to them so just because a product was safe for an animal, it does not necessarily make it safe for us.

Research by Cruelty-Free International shows us that ‘92% of drugs fail in human clinical trials despite appearing safe and effective in animal tests, often on safety grounds or because they do not work.’ This goes to show that animal testing is usually a waste of time and unfortunately a waste of an animal’s life.

You might not actually realise how many animal products are in your skincare. Animal products are everywhere from toothpaste to shampoos and make-up to nail polish, and it can be more difficult to avoid them than you might think.

The difference in vegan skincare includes more plant-based ingredients and natural herbs whereas non-vegan companies will use artificial preservatives and artificial colourants. These types of man-made chemicals can be bad for your skin and even cause irritation.

Why is vegan skincare better?

There are so many benefits to switching to vegan skincare, it is not only good for you but for the environment as well. At Mama Jewels we beehive that vegan skincare is a perfect option for anyone who is pregnant, postpartum or breastfeeding.

So cosmetic ingredients are actually absorbed through the skin and then into the bloodstream. This could have an effect on your unborn baby too. This means that during pregnancy it is more important than ever that you choose the right skincare.

So what are the benefits of using vegan skincare?

  • No animals are ever harmed in the making of any vegan skincare products. This is far more ethical than animal-tested products. It does not make sense to test on animals as they are not similar enough to us. This, therefore, makes it even more cruel when it is used as it is not even going to properly predict what effect a product may have on a human.
  • They are much more healthy for your skin and your body because of the natural, plant-based ingredients that they contain. These types of ingredients have natural anti-inflammatory effects and are full of antioxidants. At the same time, they do not contain any nasty additives or chemicals that will only serve to clog your pores up.
  • Buying vegan products will also reduce your carbon footprint. Vegan products have to be made sustainably meaning the packaging is able to be recycled instead of being made of plastic and spending years waiting to rot away.

How can you tell if a product is vegan?

It is usually not too difficult to discern if a product is vegan or not. If you are struggling, follow these steps as a guide.

  • Check the label and packaging for the ingredients. Look up the ingredients you are unfamiliar with. For instance, carmine, or cochineal extract, is a purplish-red dye which is obtained from crushed cochineal insects.
  • Use this free Vegan Ingredient Checker, to check whether the ingredients in your skincare are vegan. All you have to do is type in the name of the ingredient, and this online tool will verify whether it is vegan.
  • Look for vegan logos on the product. For example, the product might have a logo that says ‘Vegan Certified’ or ‘100% vegan’.
  • Check the company website, to see if they advertise themselves as vegan.
  • If the company website isn’t detailed enough, contact them directly to ask if their products are vegan.
  • Don’t just assume that a skincare product is vegan, just because it contains natural ingredients, such as beeswax. Beeswax cannot be classified as vegan, as it is obtained by exploiting worker bees.
  • Don’t just follow popular beauty trends. The skincare community is currently raving about ingredients like snail mucin and retinol, but these may not be vegan-friendly if they come from animals.

Are vegan products better for your skin?

Vegan skincare is great for your skin. It even offers anti-ageing benefits. This is because of all of the natural ingredients that contain nutrients and antioxidants like vitamin C.

Some of the plant-based ingredients like lavender, jojoba and chamomile hydrate your skin, reduce any irritation and kill the bacteria that clog your pores and keep your skin cells healthy.

So many vegan ingredients are naturally anti-ageing like bakuchiol which comes from the seeds of the babchi plant and is a really great substitute for retinol.

In general, there is an amazing vegan alternative out there, to what you are already using, that will improve skin tone, reduce wrinkles, and keep your skin glowing all the while being pregnancy safe.

This is why we believe in the switch to vegan skincare.

Why should you use vegan skincare?

There are so many reasons you should use vegan skincare especially if you are pregnant.

Vegan skincare saves the lives of animals all around the world. When you buy vegan products you are putting your money where your mouth is and saying no to animal cruelty and testing.

The more we buy vegan products the more they will show up on our shelves.

Some non-vegan skincare is filled with artificial fragrances and chemicals such as sulphates, parabens and dyes which are toxic. These types of ingredients can be extremely bad, disrupting hormones, affecting the reproductive organs and even affecting the outcome of births.

So many non-vegan products contain ingredients you probably would not put on your skin if you knew that they were in there. Whale vomit, animal faeces and urine, ground-up hoves and smashed insects are some of these ingredients. And remember any product you use on your skin is eventually absorbed into your bloodstream which can be very bad for your health in these circumstances.

By shopping for vegan products for your pregnant friend, partner, or family member you are actually safeguarding the pregnant person and the baby from what could be harmful ingredients.
