What Does Vegan-Friendly Mean in Skincare?

As a person who is pregnant, postpartum or breastfeeding, what you put on your skin can be important. Some ingredients from skincare can be absorbed by you through your skin and into your bloodstream, therefore if you are pregnant or breastfeeding they will make their way to the baby too.

This is why you must know what you are putting on your skin and what kind of effects it could have on not only you but on your baby.

One great way to make sure that you know nothing you are putting on your skin could be harmful is to use vegan/vegan-friendly products. This is because vegan ingredients are not going to be damaging.

What does vegan-friendly mean?

Vegan or vegan-friendly products are products that will not contain animal byproducts or animal-derived ingredients. This includes ingredients such as keratin, gelatine, collagen, lanolin, glycerin, squalene and milk proteins.

You will find that vegan products are cruelty-free which only means that they have never been tested on any animal prior to being sold. Where there is animal cruelty involved in the testing of a product it would not be considered vegan.

Where a vegan product must be cruelty-free to be classed as vegan the same is not true in reverse. Just because a product has a cruelty-free label on it does not mean that it is necessarily vegan. It definitely won’t have been tested on animals but it may still contain some ingredients that are derived from animals such as milk and honey.

We have completely different bodies from animals and animal testing is not seen as the best way to determine the safety of a product nowadays. Cruelty-free International has research that shows that ‘92% of drugs fail in human clinical trials despite appearing safe and effective in animal tests, often on safety grounds or because they do not work.’

Animal testing is a waste of time and unfortunately a waste of an animal’s life.

You might think that the products you use won’t have that many animal products in but they are everywhere and you would likely be surprised upon reading the label of your shampoo, nail polish, make-up or even your toothpaste.

How can you tell if skincare is vegan?

If you are not sure whether or not a product that you want to buy is vegan, we have a few tips to help you figure it out.

  • Check the label and packaging for the ingredients. Look up the ingredients you are unfamiliar with. For instance, carmine, or cochineal extract, is a purplish-red dye which is obtained from crushed cochineal insects.
  • Use this free Vegan Ingredient Checker, to check whether the ingredients in your skincare are vegan. All you have to do is type in the name of the ingredient, and this online tool will verify whether it is vegan.
  • Look for vegan logos on the product. For example, the product might have a logo that says ‘Vegan Certified’ or ‘100% vegan’.
  • Check the company website, to see if they advertise themselves as vegan.
  • If the company website isn’t detailed enough, contact them directly to ask if their products are vegan.
  • Don’t just assume that a skincare product is vegan, just because it contains natural ingredients, such as beeswax. Beeswax cannot be classified as vegan, as it is obtained by exploiting worker bees.
  • Don’t just follow popular beauty trends. The skincare community is currently raving about ingredients like snail mucin and retinol, but these may not be vegan-friendly if they come from animals.
