Mama Jewels is an indepedant gift box company, selling planet and vegan-friendly artisan gifts and gift boxes for pregnancy, mums & little ones and wellness for all.

Hi there, I’m Amanda Waring founder and CEO at Mama Jewels which I started whilst on Maternity leave in 2009 with my second son.

amanda waring mama jewelsMama Jewels began by selling our own British made stylish teething jewellery gift sets, which are still lovingly and carefully made and tested in our studio in Nottinghamshire. In 2010 our first staff member Elizabeth joined the business as a jewellery maker

But we always had bigger plans, and in 2014, we started to add other gifts and began to develop gift boxes too. After lots of conversations with our customers, to understand what their needs were, we designed and launched our own brand of planet-friendly gift hampers. Working closely together with other beautiful independent eco businesses in the UK, we developed a really gorgeous range of gift boxes for every Mum and baby occasion! Mama Jewels is now a gift company, selling artisan gifts and gift boxes for pregnancy, mums & little ones and wellness for all. Everything we sell is fairtrade, vegan and eco-friendly and the majority of our products are made here in the UK by small independent suppliers.

I’m sure you’ll be able to tell that our business has developed significantly. Now we have customers all over the world, which come back time after time, a few awards under our belt and some celeb fans too! One of our customers was recently spotted at Centre Court at Wimbledon and another sent us a fabulous snap from their local day out in Hollywood, USA! We also have corporate clients who regularly buy gift boxes for their work colleagues and clients and love our quality, style and planet-friendly ethos as well as benefitting from the loyalty discount we offer.

A little bit of Amanda’s story as a mum

“I looked around the baby group and realised that most of the mums, like me, had stopped wearing jewellery, when I asked why they said ‘Our children keep chewing and breaking our jewellery so we just had to stop wearing it’ That was the moment I decided to use my artisan jewellery design skills to create jewellery that a baby can’t break, can be washed, and is completely non-toxic for when babies chomp on it, but still looks gorgeous” Amanda Waring – Founder Mama Jewels

Way back in 2006, my life changed in a wonderful way, my beautiful first son Jonah was born and a love affair began. Unfortunately, at least for a while, my love affair with jewellery went on hold. I have been designing and making jewellery as since 2001 alongside my main career and successfully selling elegant, trend-led jewellery. Suddenly I was unable to wear my own designs for fear of them being broken, sucked chewed and pulled.

Being a huge ‘Jewellery Junky ‘I was stumped and began to search for some jewellery that was child-friendly but didn’t look like a toy.
I found quite a few items on the market that were child-friendly, mainly clunky silicone teething necklaces, but not too friendly to a Mum who wanted to retain a bit of style whilst accommodating a young baby.

What I really wanted to achieve was beautifully handcrafted, carefully made, fashionable jewellery that would have tight quality control every step of the way during production, that no one would guess was baby proof. But was that what other mums wanted too?

The Mama Jewels design process began whilst on Maternity leave with number two son Finley. I did absolutely loads of research with local Mums focusing on the issues they highlighted that would get them back into wearing jewellery and held focus groups to gain their views.

What they really wanted was.

  1. Great handcrafted quality
  2. Jewellery that was in line with current trends.
  3. Reliably strong
  4. Non–toxic and the need to be washable for when babies chew on your jewellery.
  5. Plenty of choices and the ability to create unique bespoke designs.
  6. A handcrafted, Artisan design feel.
  7. Value for money and well presented as other mums thought it would make a great gift.

At the time I was working in a very male-dominated environment as a Construction Project manager, with a degree in Quantity Surveying and the job which had been my life, proved particularly inflexible and unsympathetic to a new mum (I’m not sure things have changed very much since). I was travelling 2 hours each way to London by train several times a week and really missing Jonah, which led to lots of tears, guilt and decisions.

When the recession hit in 2009, the company that I was working for began to lose business. During my maternity leave with Finley, redundancies were made, and I saw this as my leap of faith moment to start Mama Jewels!

This was the perfect time to combine all my valuable quantity surveying, project management and jewellery design skills into one! After a year of research, testing at a UKAS test house, and a further year in development, MAMA JEWELS was born and launched at the 2010 Baby Show at the NEC in Birmingham, England.

I had lots of plans for other products, like gift boxes and hampers, but the invention of Mama Jewels baby-proof jewellery was the launchpad I needed to start the business.

Mama Jewels
Our studio in Nottinghamshire

Mama Jewels has come a long way since 2009. Back in those days everything was created in the spare bedroom and kitchen table was used for meetings. When Henry came along in 2012, I was evicted from the spare room and our studio project began!

I now have three fabulous boys, Jonah, Finley and Henry and they have inspired me even further. Jonah, now 15 has recently started working for us on Saturdays and holidays and is becoming a fine young man! We are still very much a family business at heart <3

If you have any ideas or suggestions please email me I really would love to hear them, I love feedback; it’s simply making our products better and better.
